مستقل زیستن تنها از عهدهٔ اقلیتی انگشتشمار برمیآید؛ امتیازی که در انحصارِ قدرتمندان است. هر آنکس که پای در این راه میگذارد، حتی اگر کاملاً محق باشد اما هیچ اجباری او را به این کار وادار نکرده باشد، نشان میدهد که افزون بر قدرت، از جسارتی بیحدومرز نیز برخوردار است. او پای در هزارتویی مینهد و خطراتِ ذاتیِ زندگی را هزارچندان میکند؛ کمترینِ این خطرات آن است که از چشم همگان پنهان میماند کجا و چگونه راه را گم کرده، در انزوا فرو رفته و چنگالِ مینوتورِ وجدان پارهپارهاش کرده است. اگر چنین فردی به ورطهٔ تباهی و مصیبت نیز بیفتد، درکِ وضع او چنان از توانِ مردمان خارج است که نه او را میفهمند و نه دلی برایش میسوزانند. دیگر راهِ بازگشتی برای او نیست! او حتی از بازگشت به آغوشِ همدردانهٔ دیگر انسانها نیز محروم است!
